Cherries

Cherries are another very exciting crop to grow in automatic retractable orchard covers since they can be used to help you increase revenues by shifting your harvest to be either the first on the market or last on the market. While the focus is always on the harvest season, the retractable roof can be used virtually 12 months per year to help:

  • Increase cold accumulation
  • Advance flowering
  • Protect flowers from frost, rain and strong wind
  • Protect crops from hail
  • Prevent splitting by protecting crops from rain close to harvest
  • Maintain fruit size and firmness by protect fruiting from excessive heat during harvest
  • Increase photosynthesis post-harvest by diffusing sunlight midday
  • Prevent double fruiting by preventing excessive water stress post harvest

To help accelerate the development of the proper control strategies and tree architecture, we have partnered with Dr. Greg Lang at Michigan State University where trials are being done every year comparing production in the automated retractable roof, a conventional rain shelter and the unprotected orchard.
