   Roof Control Strategies

Retractable roofs allow growers to take advantage of the best of mother nature, a greenhouse and a shadehouse. To do so requires a control strategy which is different from those developed for conventional greenhouses. Very simply this means that the roof should be closed if it is too cold or raining outside, retracted when outside temperatures are optimal, and most importantly, closed 85% when outside temperatures are too hot and solar radiation is intense.

The following brochure outlines:
  • the best practices for what to measure and where to measure the temperatures considering the heating effect of the sun.
  • how to prevent excessive cycling of the roof
  • when to open and close the sidewalls
  • how to automatically anticipate hail
  • overrides for wind, snow, hail and rain
  • other factors to consider, like impact on irrigation and fertilization
