   Flat Roof

Retractable "flat roof" greenhouses are an affordable way to protect rain tolerant crops from excessive heat, cold, and wind. Flat roof houses have been used to protect crops from hail and snow, but they have a limited capacity to withstand the weight of the hail or snow. There is a wide variety of water porous roof coverings and structural designs that allow for the optimal balance between crop requirements, environmental conditions, and the level of investment.

 Water Porous Greenhouse Roof Coverings

Roof coverings are water porous to allow rain to pass. Rain comes through the roof in a grid pattern. Some crops are not negatively affected by the rain.
House Designs:
Standard house widths 24' (7.3m), 30' (9.14m) , 31'-6"
  (9.6m)
Designs available for one or two separate roof systems

One retractable roof

One stationary, one retractable

Two retractable roofs
Roof heights up to 20', (6.0m)
Designs available up to 120 mph winds (193 kph)
Roof coverings:
clear woven polyethylene
white woven polyethylene
insect net
black shade cloth
blackout

One retractable roof using clear polyethyelene roof for protection from winter cold and summer heat. The clear roof can be left closed during cold days while still allowing good light transmission., and helps prevent overheating of soil temperatures on hot sunny days

One retractable roof using white polypropylene for winter cold protection and summer shade.
Crops can be protected at night from cold. On hot sunny days, the white roof provides increased shade and cooling for low light/ low temperature crops.

One retractable roof using black fabric for photoperiod control.
One retractable roof using black shade cloth for low light crops which do not need protection from cold. Stationary black shade cloth and retractable greenhouse roof for low light crops that benefit from extra light and temperature control. Retractable greenhouse roof with retractable black shade for crops that need enhanced control over light and temperatures. Heat loss at night can be reduced by closing the black shade cloth.

The walls that have motorized roll up curtains can be automatically:

opened:

for ventilation when it is raining

to expose crops to wind when it is beneficial

to improve ventilation when the roof or curtain system is closed 85% for heat reduction
closed:

to protect plants from cold/ rain or snow

to protect plants from excessive wind

to help prevent drift when overhead irrigating or spraying
If crops require protection from insects, stationary insect net can be installed on the outside of the roll up curtain openings.

 Roof System Details

Roofs are moved using stainless steel drive cables. Motors are mounted on a “walking driveline unit” which helps keep drive cables aligned. Motors move the roof at a rate of 120 cm (4 feet) per minute. Motors can power up to 9,200 square meters (100,000 square feet) of roof. Motors can be manually operated using an allan key in the event of a power failure. Drive cables are attached to drive drums, which make installation, tensioning and adjustment easier.

Roofs overlap to create a positive seal. A 30 foot (9m) wide roof retracts to around 2 feet (60cm). Moving edge has a vertical flap, which seals into the stationary edge.

Stationary seal between adjacent roof systems. Stainless steel roof suspension wires are secured using self locking vices.

 Special Applications

Life of roof coverings can be extended by installing a canopy which reduces UV exposure when the roof is retracted. Special vent canopy can help prevent overheating of crops when the roof is closed 85% during the hot times of the day. Overhead irrigation lines can be supported from cables.

Heaters can be added to help maintain warmer temperatures. Tracks to support overhead trolleys can be mounted off the side of the posts. Flat roof houses with energy trusses to eliminate perimeter bracing.
